College Essay and Application Class – our 13th Year!
Imagine having the college essay and Common Application completed before school starts!
This class offers a unique opportunity to work in a small group (12 students) to create a compelling essay, complete the Common Application, and learn valuable tips about the college process.
We are planning to have classes held in person at the Home Office in Bethesda and will offer a remote/zoom option one week as well. All college coaches are fully vaccinated and boosted. In keeping with CDC guidelines, students who are not fully vaccinated and boosted are required to wear a mask.
When: The three sessions for 2022 include a Zoom (only) option July 18-21 and two in-person sessions August 1-4 or August 8-11 (students choose one below). Week 1 and 3 are sold out. You may email email@example.com to be put on a waiting list for week 3.
The class will run from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m, Monday-Thursday.
What: Rising Seniors will:
– Write the personal essay for the Common Application.
– Discuss the timeline for applying to and visiting colleges.
– Complete the actual Common Application online.
– Learn what colleges are looking for in their specific supplements.
– Practice interview questions and receive feedback.
– Garner tips for visiting college campuses.
Where: Zoom or The Home Office of Kathleen Glynn-Sparrow (Bethesda, MD).
Cost: The cost for the ten hours of class is $625.
Note: Individual sessions are available at $250/hour if these dates do not work for your family. Essay work typically takes two hours, and guidance for the Common Application is usually one hour.
To reserve a place in the class, please complete the following registration form. In order to hold onto your slot (12 available per class), payment in full is required. Spaces are now all nearly at capacity so slots are not final until paid and confirmed via email. The fee is fully refundable if requested at least 2 weeks before your class begins.
Coaches for Summer Class:
Kathleen Glynn-Sparrow has been counseling high school students about college for over 23 years. She holds a B.A. in English from Duke University and a M.Ed. from Emory University. She works with the class as well as with students individually to help them identify a captivating topic for their essay and guide them through the writing process.
Kathleen has previously served as the Director of College Counseling at The McLean School, Associate Director of College Counseling at Stone Ridge, and Director of College Counseling at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School. She is the co-author of Sex, Drugs and the S.A.T.: Getting out of High School and Getting in to College (available on Amazon.com).
Maddie Sparrow is a High School English teacher in Durham, NC. Maddie graduated in May 2021 from Duke University where she majored in English with an Education minor, was the President of an online publication, and was honored with Duke’s Cornerstone Award. Maddie has taught and tutored high schoolers throughout her years at Duke. She shares tips from her own college process with the class and uses her expert editing skills to tighten students’ essays and to strategize on phrasing and order of the Common App Activities Section. This is her 6th year co-teaching the class.
Greg Schneider is the Department Chair of the English and Literature Department at The McLean School of Maryland and works part-time as a College Essay Coach for The College Coaches. Greg has worked for many years with upper school students in the humanities and as a writing tutor. Greg works extensively with students guiding them in crafting their college admissions essays and has written a blog titled “Writing the Perfect College Admissions Essay” for The McLean School website.
