Summer Class

Registration Now Open for the 12th year of the College Essay and Application Class!

Imagine having the college essay and Common Application completed even before school starts in the fall!

This class offers a unique opportunity to work in a small group (12 students) to create a compelling essay, complete the Common Application, and learn valuable tips about the college process.

We are excited to announce that classes will be held in person at the Sparrow Home in Bethesda as it has been for 10 years (last year we were on Zoom due to the pandemic.)  Everyone in our household is fully vaccinated. In keeping with the CDC guidelines, students who are not fully vaccinated are required to wear a mask.

Kathleen Glynn-Sparrow has been counseling high school students about college for over 20 years. She holds a B.A. in English from Duke University and a M.Ed. from Emory University.  She works with the class as well as with students individually to help them identify a captivating topic for their essay and guide them through the writing process.

Kathleen is the Director of College Counseling at The McLean School and  was Associate Director of College Counseling at Stone Ridge, and Director of College Counseling at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School. She is the co-author of Sex, Drugs and the S.A.T.: Getting out of High School and Getting in to College (available on Amazon.com).

Maddie Sparrow is an English major and Education minor at Duke University where she is the President of an online publication. She will graduate in May 2021, with her teaching license and has taught and tutored high schoolers throughout her years at Duke.  She shares tips from her own college process with the class and uses her expert editing skills to tighten students’ essays and to strategize on phrasing and order of the Common App Activities Section. This is her 5th year co-teaching the class.
