Applying to college can feel overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be. At The College Coaches, we empower our students with the tools they need to approach the process with confidence.

What Is the Common Application?

The Common Application is a streamlined way to apply to multiple colleges using one platform. Over 1,100 colleges in the U.S. and abroad use this platform. Data required includes:

  • Family and School Information

  • Activity Section

  • Personal Essay

  • School-Specific Questions (some may require an additional essay)

Touring the Common App Dashboard

The dashboard is where the magic happens. Here, students can:

  • Add colleges to their list

  • Locate supplemental questions

  • View deadlines, fees, and requirements

  • Track progress with a timeline

You can even export deadlines and requirements into Excel—a great way to stay organized.

Deadlines to Know

Each college may have different deadlines. Be sure to check the dashboard, but here’s a general guide:

  • Early Action: Oct 15 – Nov 15

  • Early Decision: Nov 1 – Nov 15

  • Regular Decision: Jan 1 – Jan 15

  • Rolling Admission: As early as Summer 2025

What Counts in the Activities Section?

You’ve done more than you think. Colleges want to know how you spend your time outside of class. Examples include:

  • Arts or music

  • Clubs and sports

  • Volunteer work

  • Family responsibilities

  • Internships and jobs

  • Summer programs and significant travel

Pro Tip: Be strategic

  • Use active verbs

  • Highlight leadership and impact

  • Stay within the 150-character limit

Example:
Founder and Co-Leader, FemLit
Founded a group for feminist analysis of literature and media. Fostered creativity and critical discussion.

What’s New in the 2025 Common App?

Students will see a couple of changes as of August 1, 2025:

  • The “Community Disruption” question is now “Challenges and Circumstances.”

  • The word count for “Additional Information” will be reduced (limit TBD).

  • Personal essay prompts will remain the same.
